Green Trade Barriers Raise Foreign Trade Access Thresholds
European and American economies strengthened green trade supervision in 2026 with the official implementation of multiple bills on carbon reduction, circular economy and hazardous substance control, imposing comprehensive restrictions on cross-border exports of building materials, general machinery, auto parts and general merchandise, and pushing the foreign trade supply chain to accelerate low-carbon and circular upgrading. The building material sector is most severely affected by the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism. Export costs of high-energy sintered bricks, ordinary cement products and fluorine-containing thermal insulation materials have risen sharply, while low-energy prefabricated components, recycled aggregate building materials and zero-formaldehyde system doors and windows enjoy customs clearance and tariff benefits for their low-carbon features. Machinery exports need to comply with energy efficiency labeling, EMC directives and waste equipment recycling rules simultaneously, and energy-saving hydraulic models and new energy-powered construction machines are more competitive in developed markets. Auto parts are subject to strict carbon footprint tracing rules. Power battery packs, plastic housings and wiring harness assemblies must disclose full-life carbon emission data to avoid additional carbon tariffs. General merchandise is restricted by packaging waste laws, with disposable plastic tableware and non-recyclable plastic bags banned from entry, making degradable catering supplies and plastic-free packaged small goods the mainstream of cross-border e-commerce shipments. The main industrial pain points lie in high green certification fees, heavy capital pressure on small and medium-sized traders and incompatible accounting standards among economies. Three major countermeasures have been adopted: replacing eco-friendly raw materials to cut carbon emissions at the production source, improving carbon footprint records to align with international third-party verification systems, and optimizing export packaging to adopt reusable outer packages. In the future, green compliance will shift from a competitive advantage to a basic prerequisite for global trade, and proactive low-carbon capacity building is essential to sustain long-term overseas market share.
